Have you ever heard someone say they are a solopreneur but didn’t know what that meant? It’s a pretty cool term that’s been gaining popularity over the last few years. Essentially, a solopreneur is an entrepreneur that runs their business completely on their own.

They’re the mastermind behind everything from the idea to the execution. It takes a ton of hard work and dedication to be a solopreneur, but if you’re up for the challenge, it can be an incredibly rewarding experience.

So you might be a solopreneur but didn’t know there was an official name for it or you might be considering becoming one. Either way, this post will give you some valuable information that can help you grow a business solo.

Running one-person businesses can be both rewarding and daunting. To help make sure that your journey as a solo owner is successful, it’s important to have certain qualities and strategies ingrained in every step of your process.
In this post, I’m going to dive into some key traits for success among women entrepreneurs who work solo – giving you tips for being an effective leader of your own company.

In recent years, more women are opting to become solopreneurs. Gone are the days when women had to rely on traditional employment avenues to meet their financial needs. Now, thanks to advances in technology and social media, women have the freedom and flexibility to make their own rules in the work world.

For an online business, all you need is an idea, a computer or mobile device, and WiFi, and you can start a business. Whether it’s starting a successful blog, creating a thriving online business, or providing unique services to clients, women solopreneurs are paving the way for themselves.

By choosing to venture off on their own, these fearless ladies (and that may include you), are not only showcasing their creativity and determination but also inspiring others to follow in their footsteps.

If you are considering starting your own business, you’ll probably initially do everything yourself. Keep reading to learn what it takes to be a successful solopreneur.


Qualities of a Successful Solopreneur


Self-motivation is not just about setting expectations, being accountable, and taking initiative – it’s about understanding the power you hold within yourself. I listed this as the first quality because if you are not a self-starter, you won’t make it as an solopreneur.

When you take ownership of your actions and outcomes, you unleash an inner drive that propels you forward toward success. It can be easy to simply go through the motions of our responsibilities, but true self-leadership requires us to push beyond our comfort zones and take risks.

By doing so, you gain a deeper understanding of your capabilities and potential, which can lead to breakthroughs in both your personal and professional lives. Being self-motivated is not always easy, but the rewards are well worth the effort.

Successful solopreneurs have self-discipline


Self-discipline is a topic that I feel is really important to talk about. This is another quality that you will find in successful entrepreneurs.

It’s not always easy to stay motivated and focused, but to succeed as a one-woman business, you’ll definitely need to have self-discipline.

Whether it’s sticking to a content creation routine, regularly posting on social media, recording, editing and releasing a YouTube video each week, self-discipline is the key to success.

It takes practice, but by setting achievable goals and creating a plan of action, you can develop your self-discipline muscle and become more efficient and effective in your business.

Successful solopreneurs have confidence

There’s something magnetic about confident people. They exude a special kind of energy that draws us in and leaves us feeling uplifted. They don’t necessarily have to be extroverted or outgoing; confidence can take many forms.

You’ll find that for the most part, successful solopreneurs are very confident. I say for the most part because occasionally, impostor syndrome rears it’s ugly head. The difference is that successful entrepreneurs don’t let it stop them. They have learned skills or have tools that they use to get past fear, doubt, impostor syndrome, etc., and keep going.

Confidence is a highly attractive trait and many of those in your niche audience will admire you for it. It’s the key that unlocks doors and sets us on the path to success.

Successful solopreneurs are resourceful

Solopreneurs are resourceful beings! They possess the unique ability to navigate through challenging obstacles that come their way, without losing sight of their goals.

From managing finances to marketing their products, there is no challenge that they cannot overcome. Their creative minds always find ways to reach out to potential customers and attract them. They draw inspiration from their surroundings and take every opportunity to learn new skills or techniques that can be used to grow their business.

It’s this resourcefulness that makes them stand out from the crowd and ensures their success. The path to success may not be easy, but solopreneurs understand that obstacles are mere opportunities to learn and grow, and they use these experiences to progress toward their ultimate goal. Just remember, Google and YouTube can help you get most of your questions answered.



Successful solopreneurs are a rare breed of individuals who are akin to fearless warriors. They are the ones who do not let the fear of failure hold them back. Rather than sulking over failed product launches or getting bogged down by hearing no or receiving a negative comment, they pick themselves up and learn from their shortcomings. And that is what makes them successful.

They keep pushing forward, adapting to new technologies and markets, aiming to carve out a niche for themselves. They are in it for the long haul and with each setback, they come back stronger, more determined, and more creative.


Adapting to changing situations and technology is a must if you want to stay ahead of the curve. Successful solopreneurs know this. The key to success is knowing when to pivot and being open to new possibilities.

It takes courage and a willingness to take risks, but the rewards can be well worth it. Solopreneurs who have mastered these skills understand that holding on to outdated methods will only hold them back. Tips for becoming a successful solopreneur

Now that we have talked about qualities of a successful solopreneur, let’s now give you some tips that can help you. I not only teach these to my students, I use them in my own business.

Solopreneurs focus on a niche audience

Your first task is to determine the niche audience you want to serve. A niche is a segment of the market. For example, you may be very knowledgeable about weight loss.

Weight loss is a huge area and is really too big to try and focus on and build an engaged audience around. Instead, you may decide you want to focus on weight loss for women. While that’s better, you need to continue to niche down to really be able to create and provide valuable content to a segment of the market.

So, maybe your niche becomes women over 40 that are interested in losing weight in a safe and healthy manner. Another niche could be new moms that are trying to lose the baby weight but have limited time to exercise.

The point is, the more you niche down the better you’ll be able to find a community of people that you can create valuable content for, and help reach their goals.

Successful solopreneurs have found their business sweet spot

Your business sweet spot is found at the intersection of three things:

  1. What you love to do,
  2. What you’re good at doing and,
  3. What people will pay you for

When you are trying to figure out your business sweet spot, think about your gifts and talents. Also consider, what you enjoy doing in your free time and what comes easily to you.

Make a list of the your talents and what you love doing. Next, do a search on Etsy, Amazon, Google, Answer The Public, and Quora to find out what books and products people are looking for, that you are knowledgeable about. This is a great way to find content and products you can create.

Solopreneurs have strong personal brands

As a solopreneur, one of the most essential components to your success is the development of a strong personal brand. Creating a narrative that resonates with your target audience and effectively communicates who you are and what you stand for is vital. But how can you stand out in a sea of competitors? My tip is to embrace your “You-ness.”

Don’t be afraid to take risks, experiment, and showcase your personality through your branding efforts. Use your unique traits to your advantage and let your personality shine. Whether it be through phrases you use regularly, or how you deliver your message, this is all part of your branding.

Other components of your personal brand include your logo, social media content, website design, or marketing materials. By incorporating elements of your personal brand throughout, you will not only help yourself stand out, but also make a lasting impression on potential customers.

Remember, being a solopreneur means you are the face of your brand, so don’t be afraid to let your personality lead the way.

Solopreneurs create content regularly and consistently

As a solopreneur, you might think that creating content is just another task to add to your already overflowing to-do list. However, creating helpful content for your audience regularly and consistently is essential for building trust and establishing yourself as an authority in your field. Not only does it allow you to showcase your knowledge and skills, but it also helps you connect with your audience on a deeper level.

By providing valuable information and insights, you’ll inspire your audience to engage with your brand and ultimately become loyal customers. So, don’t neglect the power of content creation – put your knowledge and skills to work and start crafting content that will take your business to the next level.


Solopreneurs set clear goals and create roadmaps

Just as large companies set goals, it’s also important that solopreneurs set clear goals and create a roadmap to achieve them. You should set goals that cover the content or products that you want to create, the income you want to earn and any other things you want to accomplish. If you don’t have a plan for success, it’s going to be hard to achieve success.

Start by setting daily, weekly, monthly and annual goals. Once your goals are set, break them down into actionable steps. Remember your goals should be S.M.A.R.T.

This stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound. Here’s an example of a SMART goal: Earn $2,500 per month from the sale of digital products, by 12/31/24.

Next, to achieve this goal, break it down into small actionable steps. This might include identifying what product you are going to sell and assigning a price to the product. Next, determine the number of units that must be sold each week and decide how and where you are going to promote your product.

From that point, execute your plan and track your progress towards the goal. Make adjustments as needed to help you achieve your goal.


Solopreneurs have multiple sources of income, some that are independent of their efforts

As a solopreneur, your income is derived from your actions alone. Some people describe this as “eat what you kill.” Having run my own businesses for 20+ years, I’m going to make a recommendation that I hope you will follow: have multiple sources of income for your business. This way, if one source declines (or goes away completely), you don’t go into panic mode because income will still flow from other sources.

I have an online business that focuses on digital products and courses. I don’t have one digital product, I have several. This same is true with my courses. I also have income that comes from gratitude journals I published via Kindle Direct Publishing, several affiliate marketing programs, and in the future, I hope to add the YouTube Partner Program and brand sponsorships.

Think of ways that you can create additional sources of income. You might be able to add physical products, merchandise, coaching clients, digital products, courses, etc. to increase your income. Click here if you are interested in learning how to create your first digital product.

I also recommend that you have some passive sources of income. Passive income in this sense means that you create it once and then sell it over and over again on auto-pilot. Having income derived from passive sources means you don’t have to work constantly. You’ll be able to experience the beauty of earning money while you sleep, spend time with family and friends or while on vacation.


Solopreneurs should continuously learn and improve

Being a solopreneur is no easy task. In fact, it can be downright challenging, stressful, and overwhelming at times. However, those who take the time to continuously learn new skills and strategies are the ones who succeed. It’s not enough to simply launch a business and kick up your feet, expecting success to come your way.

No, success is something that must be earned through hard work, dedication, and a willingness to improve. By embracing creativity, innovation, and a growth mindset, solopreneurs can unlock their full potential and pave the way towards a brighter future. So if you’re a solopreneur, don’t settle for mediocrity. Instead, strive for excellence, and never stop learning.


Build a supportive network of other solopreneurs

We all need business besties! This is supportive group of entrepreneurs that understand the unique challenges of running a business solo. You can find these individuals in Facebook groups, on Instagram, at business conferences, etc.

Find someone that’s on the same journey (even if they are in a different industry), that you can bounce ideas off of, share best practices, serve as a sounding board or help pick you up if you’re having a bad day.

Make use of business tools to increase productivity

As a solopreneur, you’re not only the CEO, but the sales team, graphic designer, and content creator, all rolled into one. It’s a lot to handle, which is why incorporating business tools can be a game-changer.

Imagine being able to schedule social media posts in advance, live-stream to multiple platforms at the same time, track your expenses and income in one place, and automate tedious tasks like invoicing and appointment reminders. By streamlining your workflow, you’ll have more time to focus on what you do best – growing your business.

Plus, these tools can also increase your productivity, leading to improved work-life balance and less stress. So, boost your productivity with the power of technology.

Take care of yourself and maintain a healthy work-life balance


As a solopreneur, it’s easy to get sucked into the daily grind of running your business without taking proper care of yourself. However, if you want your business to thrive, you need to prioritize your well-being.

Healthy meals, regular exercise, and vacations are just as important as any business task on your to-do list. Not only will it benefit your physical health, but taking these breaks will also clear your mind and give you new perspectives and ideas.

A healthy work-life balance is also crucial. Don’t let your relationships suffer because you’re always working. You need mental breaks and time away from your business, so you can recharge and come back stronger.

Remember, as a solopreneur, you are the heart and soul of your business. If you don’t take care of yourself, your business will suffer too.



Solopreneurs are a special breed of entrepreneurs that work hard work, have to focus and determination. Being successful in this field means mastering self-motivation, discipline, resilience, and being able to adapt. Although the road to success may be challenging, taking on the challenge provides an incredible sense of accomplishment.

Establishing clear goals with a roadmap to accomplish them and making use of resources that help increase productivity can make all the difference.
